From time to time, Oracle will release a new build of Java with security fixes. We recommend to regularly upgrade Java to the latest version. The exact way to upgrade Java depends on the way it was installed (e.g., from the Linux distribution sources, or as a separate install). To upgrade Java when installed to /opt, perform the following

  1. Download the latest supported version of Java. See Software packages and download locations for the exact version and location.
  2. Unzip the archive to /opt
  3. Update the symlink /opt/jre to point to the directory jre in the new extracted /opt/jdk... directory.
  4. Restart any affected services.
  5. Remove the old JDK directory.
